DIY "hello" Doormat

I absolutely adore THIS "hello" doormat from lightly!!!

But at $75 (AUD), I can't believe it is sold out. I love this thing, but $75 for a doormat is a bit much. So off I went to get some supplies for a DIY.

I found this doormat at Dirt Cheap for $5.

I already had flat black spray and white acrylic paint on hand, so that makes the total cost $5!!! Even if you don't have the supplies you could probably do it for under $15.

STEP 1. Start by spray painting your entire mat black. Really make sure to get into those nooks and crannies. Mine took 3 coats to cover that darn writing!!!

STEP 2. Once the paint is completely dry, sketch out the letters lightly with chalk. You can rinse them off with water and re-write it until you are happy, or print out the letters and make a a stencil.

STEP 4. Once you are happy with the letters, use a small paint brush and begin tracing over the chalk. Let it dry and then enjoy your friendly mat!

Decorating with Air Plants

I am absolutely loving the simplicity and quirkiness of air plants. They are so cute and dainty and easy to decorate with.

Etsy, Ebay, and Amazon are all great places to buy air plants. I bought a pack of 5 plants on Etsy along with a small pack of sea urchins from Amazon all for under $10! And just to prove how easy it is to decorate with them here are a few ideas:

The only positive thing about dogs with digging problems: they dig up awesome driftwood!

PUT THEM IN A BELL JAR

Just make sure that there is some sort or opening to let air flow in.
Otherwise be sure to open the jar every now and then to give the plants fresh air.

Grab a wine cork and glue a small magnet to the back. Then carve out the center with a knife and set the plant in it.

12 AFFORDABLE Modern Dining Chairs

I have been on the lookout for a new dining table & chairs for a while now. I can't find the exact table I have in mind, so I decided to build my own (stay tuned for that fiasco). Ideally, I would have an 8-10 person table that is a mix of rustic wood with modern chairs. However, trying to find a bargain for that many chairs is really hard. My go-to discount stores like TJ Maxx rarely have more than 4 of kind in stock, so that rules that out. Luckily, I have scoured the internet for some fabulous, and more importantly affordable, finds. Now my problem will be choosing from this pool of beauties!

6. NANDOR Chair // $80 - consider spraying the legs black to get THIS high-end look
7. STOCKHOLM Chair // $198
9. Tracy Wood Dining Chair // $216 - if this is too pricey, consider using 2 of these as head chairs and using chair #1 as the side chairs
10. Baxton Studio Wishbone Chair // $175 (+20% off coupons) - this chair was at TJ Maxx for $100, but I had trouble finding more than 5.
12. ESBJÖRN Chair // $89

I also love the idea of using different chairs for the head of the table like this:

Easy Cactus Centerpiece

Cactus Garden Centerpiece | The Twisted Horn

I love having fresh flowers and living plants in my house, but I don't have a lot of natural light so I tend to stick to hearty no-fuss plants. That's why I LOVE cacti! They come in so many shapes, sizes, and colors and are extremely tolerant. Since my herb centerpiece died I have been looking for something to plant. I love succulents, but I tend to kill those too. Then I remembered loving a cactus centerpiece from Young House Love, so I decided to make one of my own.

I already had this planter on hand from Wal-mart that I have been using as the centerpiece for my dining table.

I searched far and wide for the perfect cacti! Home Depot had the best selection by far. I bought 5 (it was so hard to choose, they were all amazing and unique) and it ended up costing about $17.

Before planting them, I arranged them exactly how I wanted. Then I planted (wearing gloves), watered, wiped down, and finally admired my work!

CURRENT OBSESSION: Dark Walls

A lot of people think painting a house is such a daunting and permanent task, but I think it is the best way to freshen up a place and really make it your own. Paint sets the mood and becomes the palette for all of your decor, so why settle for something that someone else picked?

My house is a mix of neutrals and dark greiges, but my current obsession is dark walls. You may remember a while back my sister took the plunge and painted her bathroom navy (check it out HERE), well the pictures don't even do it justice. It's calming, modern, lively, and sleek all at the same time. Ever since, dark walls everywhere have been catching my eye. Here are some of my favorites:

  • Choose a room or area with lots of windows to break up the paint
  • Pick a room that isn't a main focal point (bathroom, laundry room, etc)
