Stair Runners on a Budget

I love wood floors just as much as the next girl, but wooden staircases can be really dangerous for kids and pets (and adults wearing socks). Growing up my dog took a few tumbles sprinting down the stairs and from then on we had to carry her up and down or put up with her wailing while she waited by the stairs. Solution: stylish runners.

As I've started to brainstorm my next house (finally a non-rental yay!) stair runners have definitely been on my radar. It needs to look good, put up with heavy traffic, and be inexpensive.

I love the look of a natural fiber rug, but they are so hard to clean that I had to rule it out for the stairs.

After a lot of entertaining and a slew of messy pets, I found that flat weave rugs with a pattern tend to be the most durable and easy to clean/hide stains.

Finding a good deal on smaller carpets and combining a few of them to get one continuous runner is a good budget friendly option.

This tutorial from Little Green Notebook is a great use of 4 Ikea rugs to make one full length runner for $100.

And, at $30 for two rugs, this tutorial from Golden Boys & Me is right up my alley.

Steal Her Style: Kourtney Kardashian Maternity

Since Kourtney Kardashian is with child once again, I thought it would be a great time to revisit her AMAZING maternity style. No one does pregnancy as well as Kourtney, she is honestly the poster child woman for dressing a baby bump.

>>> MATERNITY SUMMER DRESSES <<<

Dresses are my favorite, especially during pregnancy. It's one article of clothing and it looks pulled together. Plus it's super comfortable. How much easier can it get? The form fitting black dress and red and white striped dress show off Kourtney's expanding belly which she smartly accessorizes with a bright tote. However, her real talent is pulling off a shift dress. As a petite lady myself (coming in at 5'2'') I know that wearing a shift dress can just as easily look frumpy as it does fabulous. It's tough to pull the look off just right and not look like you threw a sack over yourself. Kourtney's look works because she has the two most important things right: LENGTH and SHOULDER WIDTH. This girl knows her sweet spot and her dresses fall just a few inches above the knee. I would estimate about an inch past the point of her fingertips. The other part needed to pull the look off is a perfectly fitted shoulder width. She focuses on the smallest part of her shoulders and makes sure the top is structured and there is no extra fabric bunching up. This is crucial for making this look work! I adore how she pairs these dresses with sandals and flats, it's just so darn practical! LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!

>>> MATERNITY MAXI DRESSES <<<

Maxi dresses are the best! Kourtney looks like a maternal goddess in all her flowing splendor. She mixes it up by wearing different necklines. She does some empire maxi dresses with a rounded neck and a v-neck to subtly show off that great rack. She doesn't overwhelm the look with baubles but instead opts for a large tote and a structured blazer and works in a pop of color. The key here is to KEEP IT SIMPLE. There's no need for tons of colors, and patterns, and accessories, and layers. Just make sure those shoulders are properly fitted and your dress is the proper length (not dragging or above the ankle). Once again, she finishes the look with sandals.

>>> MATERNITY SKINNY PANTS <<<

Of course we can't leave out the ever-popular black skinny pants. Here she rocks out the skinny jeans with a plain white tee and a fab stripped blazer. So simple and classic. For an edgier look she pairs black leggings with an off the shoulder, flowy black and white top. Balance is key in both these looks. If you are going to rock a loose top then the bottom has to be fitted (and vise versa). Also, in both these looks she sticks to a specific color palate - black and white - making the entire look cohesive. She completes the look with flats and booties (she's obviously earlier in her pregnancy and her feet have not yet swelled to epic proportions yet OR she just bought bigger shoes)!

Here's how you can steal her style for less:

10 Pot & Planter DIYs To Try Now

With the Fourth of July coming up, we are in the dead-center of the "entertaining outdoors" season. That means, if you haven't already, you need to start sprucing up the yard. My favorite quick and easy way to add color and style to the yard is with plants. These DIY pots and planters would make the perfect indoor or outdoor decoration. The smaller ones would even make great centerpieces!

TTH Takes on the Florida Keys

One of my biggest priorities in life is traveling. I would rather eat cup noodles everyday than sacrifice traveling. I also think it is so important as an adult to continually prioritize and nurture relationships with my girlfriends. As we get older, it seems to get harder and harder to make time for each other, but even if it's just a lunch date, it's a must-do to maintain sanity. I was lucky enough to spend this past weekend traveling through the Florida Keys with my childhood best friend and Pilates guru, Jennie (check out her amazeball new studio HERE!) and check out our weekend highlights below!

Fittingly found on the back of our plastic margarita cup.

>>WHAT TO PACK<<

What to Pack - Florida Keys | The Twisted Horn

The Keys are super casual, so a bathing suit and beach cover up is a good go-to uniform. Sunglasses, a hat, and sunscreen are a must because that summer sun in NOT forgiving. We went during low season to save money, but that also meant that it was the hottest time of the year. It wasn't unbearable though, so I would definitely do it again.

Reading List - Florida Keys | The Twisted Horn

Some beach/poolside reading is always a good idea. If you haven't already read this book, go buy it right now this second. It is hilarious and such a quick read.

>>STOP ALONG THE WAY<<

We got a rental car and drove from Miami down to Key West. We decided to stop in Islamorada, which was almost exactly the halfway point. Highlights included lunch at Pierre's and coffee at Café Moka.

Pierre's - Florida Keys | The Twisted Horn

Pierre's is a popular wedding venue and hotel in Islamorada. In fact, two of my sweet friends were married here and it was so special to see it in person. Attached to the hotel is a little restaurant with tables right on the sand. It's a bit pricier than some of the hole-in-the-wall places along the way, but the fish was AMAZING!

>> KEY WEST <<

Paseo - Key West | The Twisted Horn

Paseo Caribbean Food. Cheap, huge portions, delicious.

Key Lime Pie - Key West | The Twisted Horn

Key Lime Pie Factory. A trip to Key West is not complete without trying a chocolate covered slice of key lime pie on a stick.

Blue Heaven - Key West | The Twisted Horn

Blue Heaven. We didn't actually get a chance to eat here, but I couldn't leave it off the list. It's the most popular restaurant in Key West and has amazing reviews. Apparently, don't leave without trying a slice of their key lime pie.

D R I N K

Amigos - Key West | The Twisted Horn

Amigos. Their classic margarita is strong and not overly sweet/syrupy. Even though we were in Key West for only one full day, we somehow managed to make multiple stops to this place.

Green Parrot - Key West | The Twisted Horn

Green Parrot Bar. Another place we actually didn't make it to, but it's definitely a must on the list. This bar is historic and practically synonymous with Key West.

S E E

Southernmost Point - Key West | The Twisted Horn

Southernmost Point. Closer to Cuba than Miami. This is the southernmost point in the continental U.S.

Earnest Hemingway House

Sunset Mallory Square - Key West | The Twisted Horn

Sunset at Mallory Square. Head to Mallory Square about an hour or two before the sun is supposed to set. Walk around Mallory Square and then head to the bar on the pier for drinks as you watch the sunset.

CURRENT OBSESSION: Bobs & Bangs

Who knew that my go-to hairdo throughout childhood would make a come back in my adult life?!?! A tousled bob with piecey bangs is all the rage these days and I'm loving it.

Per usual, I looked to some celebs for hair-spiration. These ladies are totally rocking their bangs on the red carpet, proving that bangs aren't just trendy, but can be chic too.

As much as I love this look, I am having such a hard time committing! The nice thing about bangs is that they grow out quickly and in the meantime they can be swept to the side, braided, or pinned back. What do you think about the bob & bang trend, is it a do or don't?
